The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho Questions From the book Answered

I just finished reading the profoundly insightful book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This is the second book from this author that has affected me in a deep and meaningful way. I read Aleph and have now found Coelho to be in my list of favorite authors. With that being said, I decided I would take the opportunity and answer Questions for Discussion from The Alchemist.

1. Yes, there is an element of "narcissism" in pursuing one's 'Personal Legend'.

nar·cis·sism

  [nahr-suh-siz-em]  Show IPA
noun
1.
inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love;vanity. self-centeredness, smugness,egocentrism.
2.
Psychoanalysis erotic gratification derived from admirationof one's own physical or mental attributes, being a normalcondition at the infantile level of personality development.

An element of narcissism is necessary in order for one to find their self. Your journey is your own and it must be embraced. As the book says, many never realize their true meanings and those that do and fail to follow or pursue live in regret.

2. Yes, I have have an experience or rather a thought that I would describe as having been a "conversation" with a part of nature. I am a nature lover and often look to the sky for meaning and reflection. I wrote a poem about a tree in a park and how no one pays attention to it because it's just there. But ironically the tree gets to experience the lives of the many people who take comfort in its shade or those that just admire it or how the tree observes how things change around it.

There's No Justice, There's Just Us

It's not just about Trayvon.
His murder was a catalyst.
It's not just about Emmit Till.
His murder was a catalyst.
It's not just about the Jena 6 or Rosa Parks.
It's not just about ...

Ramarley Graham, Arthur McDuffie, James Byrd, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Yusef Hawkins, Oscar Grant, Willie Turks, George Jackson, Derrick Jones, Martin Luther King Jr, Corey Brown, Henry Glover, Alonzo Ashley, Reginald Doucet, Troy Davis, Kenneth B Walker, Michael Griffith, Bernard Monroe, Malcolm X, Khiel Coppin, James Craig Anderson, Roger and Dorothy Malcom, Henry Smith, Stephon Watts, Rekia Boyd, Shaima Alawadi

The list goes on and on and on.

When will it END?

We don't need anymore catalysts, wake up calls, walking/driving while black, stop and frisk, 500 more years.

This is about disenfranchisement, economic inequality, sub-standard living, not receiving a quality education, higher rates of unemployment,  highest rate of incarcerated individuals, too many single-parent households.

Children in Chicago killing each other, for what? Yeah this is about that too.

It hurts. I'm tired.

We're all tired of fighting the same struggle day in and day out to be recognized ...

as H U M A N S

We haven't received reparations,  the Japanese did,  the Jews did, those in the Middle East have. I, we, they are just as human as everyone else. Wouldn't you be just as upset if all you hear and see are your brothers and sisters dying at your feet, down your street, in your city, their town, our world?

There is no justice,  there's Just Us.

WordplaY

There's a
child-like curiosity
peaks with intensity
Whenever you're around
Just wanna sit and listen
question with some
predictability
But really it's infatuation
with your mentality
How the words are framed
conjugated verbally
Pronounced annunciation
Impeccably melodic
word play
Speak and spell
under your spell
bound
magically lost in
dictionary pages
turning
Forming
and re-framing
new syllabic illustrations
I wanna pick up
Letters
Puzzling them
Pieces scattered
Then brought back together
Imagination
I
Image
A
Nation
Of non-speakers
Linguistically patterning
soundscapes with premeditated
Shapes
Hieroglyphics passed on
Through space and time
bridging universes
Verbally
Speaking only with gestures of
strokes outlined with deep tones
Thread creating imprints in one's
psyche defy me words
Playing hide-n-seek between
Lines I speak
momentarily voiced
Echoing in vibrato
Tenor and falsetto
Through parted lips yelling
A whisp to her
Ears ringing with bells
toying with emotional
High pitched low timbres
Word sound not lost
But found in my sandbox of abc's
I frequently find joy here
In my world play
Displaying painted canvas
Of vibrant characters all across
azul and midnight blue sky
Let's play a game
You first, eye  write
